Lord of the Flies Essay
Statement Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, the prosecution will prove beyond the shadow of a doubt that the defendant, Jack Merridew, is guilty of two counts of murder. We will show that Mr. Merridew was fully responsible for the deaths of Simon and Piggy when the boys were stranded on an island without adult supervision. We will show that Jack quickly became a sadistic savage who believed that the rules and laws of civilization did not apply to him. He constantly fought against and disobeyed Ralph who was the democratically elected leader of the boys. He valued killing above all other activities and constantly tried to convince the other boys to follow him and not listen to Ralph. Although the circumstances surrounding Simonââ¬â¢s death were accidental, the prosecution will show that Jackââ¬â¢s behavior caused the boys to act as killers. Jack ruled his boys through fear and he made them follow him because they believed that he could protect them. We will show that Jack knew that the beast was not real but he pretended it was so that all the boys would continue to be afraid. One of Jackââ¬â¢s strategies to make the boys feel braver was that he created the death chant, ââ¬Å"kill the beast, cut his throat, spill his blood. â⬠Also Jack created the dance where a boy pretended to be a pig while all the other boys stood around him and pretended to spear him to death. It was in the middle of this crazed dance that Simon stumbled out from the jungle and all the boys fell upon him and killed him. The prosecution will also present evidence that shows that Jack was responsible for Piggyââ¬â¢s death. Shortly after the boys crashed, Jack broke Piggyââ¬â¢s glasses making Piggy even more helpless than he already was. Then Jack raided Ralphââ¬â¢s camp and stole Piggyââ¬â¢s glasses. This final act was a death sentence for Piggy because without his specs he could not see the rock tumbling down the mountain towards him that killed him. The prosecution will also show that from the very beginning Jackââ¬â¢s hatred of Piggy influenced all the boys. Jack hated Piggy because Piggy was fat and physically weak. Jack believed in the law of the jungle, which states that only the strong survive. Jack makes up the chant ââ¬Å"kill the pigâ⬠and this chant always causes the boys to be frenzied, crazed, unthinking savages. ââ¬Å"Kill the pigâ⬠could be seen as being close to ââ¬Å"kill the piggyâ⬠so itââ¬â¢s not a surprise when Piggy is finally killed. Piggy wants Ralph to remain the leader because he knows that he is protected and wonââ¬â¢t be hurt by Jack as long as Ralph is the leader. When Piggy is killed, Ralph is no longer the leader and after Piggy dies Jack screams ââ¬Å"thatââ¬â¢s what youââ¬â¢ll getâ⬠and he throws his spear at Ralph. Questions for Witnesses Ralph 1. When Jack threw his spear at you and then hunted you, did you think that he was going to kill you? 2. Were you afraid of Jack? 3. Was Jack a bully? Sam and Eric 1. Did Jackââ¬â¢s boys ever hurt you? 2. Were you afraid of Jack? 3. When Jack kidnapped you and tied you up did you want to be part of his tribe? Piggyââ¬â¢s Auntie 1. How well could Piggy see without his glasses? 2. If Piggy had been wearing his specs could he have seen the rock coming towards him and gotten out of the way? 3. Since Jack stole his glasses do you believe that Jack is responsible for Piggyââ¬â¢s death? Naval Officer 1. When you arrived on the beach what was Ralph doing? 2. How did all the boys look? 3. Do you think that they were playing a game or was the hunt real? Roger 1. What do you admire about Jack? 2. When you pushed the rock down the mountain and killed Piggy how did you feel? 3. When you were torturing Wilfred and Sam and Eric did you believe that this was wrong? Jackââ¬â¢s Parents 1. Did Jack ever get in trouble at school for being a bully? 2. When Jack played with other boys what kinds of games did he like to play? 3. Did Jack ever steal anything? Percival 1. Were you afraid of Jack? 2. Why did you choose to join Jackââ¬â¢s tribe? 3. Do you think that Ralph or Jack was the better leader? Maurice 1. Why did you choose to go with Jack to steal Piggyââ¬â¢s glasses? 2. Why didnââ¬â¢t you just ask Piggy if you could borrow his glasses? How did you feel when you knocked over the littlunsââ¬â¢ sandcastles? Robert 1. When you pretended to be the pig, were you hurt? 2. Were you afraid during this activity? 3. Were you afraid of Jack? Closing Statement Ladies and Gentlemen of the jury, we believe that the constitution has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that the defendant, Jack Merridew, is a sadistic bully without conscience or regard for the laws and appropriate behavior that are part of civilized society. Jack chose to be a savage criminal on this island. He disobeyed Ralphââ¬â¢s rules that provided structure and order. Ralph was the elected leader and Jack intentionally broke away from this group and formed his own tribe of savage hunters. He ruled this group through fear and physical violence. The boys of Jackââ¬â¢s tribe paid no attention to morals or good behavior. They simply did what they wanted to do and never stopped to say to themselves, ââ¬Å"Is this a good way to behave? â⬠or ââ¬Å"is this right? â⬠From the beginning Jack was a boy who was obsessed with hunting and killing pigs. Then he became a complete savage and the sport of hunting pigs became boring. He needed more excitement so he invented the sport of hunting and killing human beings. You the jury have the responsibility to render a verdict of guilty for two counts of murder. Jack is responsible for the deaths of Simon and Piggy. It is true that he did not push the rock down the mountain that killed Piggy. But he was responsible for creating a tribe of boys who no longer had good moral behavior and who didnââ¬â¢t value human life. It is true that Jack alone that Jack did not kill Simon. But he was responsible for creating the frenzied crazed behavior through his chant and dance that led to Simonââ¬â¢s death. Jack is guilty of murder. The prosecution rests.

Sample Executive Summary For Your Business PlanApril 5, 2011 ââ¬â 11:14 am Earlier in Invest Engine Blog we have talked aboutà executive summary contentsà andà how to write executive summary. Using all this information we shall now pass to actually writing an executive summary taking restaurant business plan as an example. Writing executive summaries is among the most important business skills. The majority of investors whom youââ¬â¢ll address with your project will read your executive summary first. And only then will decide whether to proceed with your start up or leave it alone. So letââ¬â¢s get started! 1. Executive Summary Cover Passing along a naked text is not a good idea. So do provide a cover for your executive summary. The executive summary cover page should contain: * your company logo; * the title of your project; * your contact information; * the subtitle ââ¬Å"Executive Summaryâ⬠(not to confuse this document with the full version of your business p lan). 2. The Opening Statement: Who? What? When? Where? Why? From the very first sentence it should be understood what your project is about. Showing respect to your readersââ¬â¢ time and attention is highly appreciated. So if you can answer theà Five Wââ¬â¢sà in a single sentence, it is perfect. But sometimes it is better to break it down into smaller sentences. And DO avoid general phrases and adjectives like ââ¬Å"greatâ⬠, ââ¬Å"uniqueâ⬠, ââ¬Å"exclusiveâ⬠as they make you look boastful right from the start. From the cover page of ourà sample restaurant executive summaryà the reader knows that the project is called: ââ¬Å"BBQ-5 ââ¬â barbecue restaurant in Chicago, ILâ⬠. So the opening statement of the executive summary could be: ââ¬Å"BBQ-5 is a new barbecue restaurant in Chicago, IL founded by Mr. BBQ.This will be the fifth restaurant of ââ¬Å"Mr. BBQ Family of Restaurantsâ⬠ââ¬â the barbecue chain founded in 2005 and is alread y well-known in The Great Lakes area. â⬠3. Brief Company ProfileYou are sure to provide some detailed information about your company background, its mission and business objectives in your business plan. But the major highlights should be put into executive summary as well. Typically you are expected to say: * When was your business founded? * What are the major industries and regions of operations? * What are your business mission and business objectives? How many people work in your firm? * What is your position in the company? In the sample executive summary we are going through it is stated thatà ââ¬Å"theà chain was founded in 2005 and is already well-known in The Great Lakes areaâ⬠(the info about the year the business was founded and the region of operation is provided). And so it is continued: ââ¬Å"The other restaurants are located two in Cleveland, OH, one in Detroit, MI and one in Milwaukee, WI. Each of the restaurants started by Mr. BBQ reached the break -even point within a year. Though Mr. BBQ and Mrs. BBQ are principle owners, it is Mr.BBQââ¬â¢sà intention to offer outside ownership in ââ¬Å"BBQ-5? restaurant on an equity, debt, or combination basis in order to facilitate the opening of BBQ-5 restaurant and further growth of the chain. â⬠From this paragraph it is clear that the principal figures in the company are Mr. BBQ and Mrs. BBQ and their major business goal isà ââ¬Å"further growth of the chainâ⬠. 4. Project Description Normally executive summary should always be written last. You already have a perfectly written product description in your business plan and can now copy-paste the highlights into your executive summary. It should really take minutes! In the business plan for BBQ-5 restaurant it was stated that location is a key success factor. So in the executive summary it would be perfect to start with the advantages of the location and target audience of the restaurant: ââ¬Å"BBQ-5 will be opened in leased premises in the very heart of Chicago ââ¬â the Loop district. The Loop is the center of Chicagoââ¬â¢s cultural, commercial and financial institutions. It is also the major tourist destination. And the neighboring district ââ¬â The North Side ââ¬â is the most densely populated residential section of the city.It is also a popular take-away destination. So BBQ-5 will target residents of The Loop district, office workers and tourists. â⬠Then we briefly describe restaurantââ¬â¢s projected capacity, its specialization and the key competitive advantages (these are also copy-pasted from the business plan): ââ¬Å"The restaurant will specialize in traditional style barbecue meals: smoked pork, veal and fish, steaks and sandwiches. The menu will also include a variety of vegetarian meals and the widest range of sauces. The restaurantââ¬â¢s projected capacity is 340 seats. After that you can outline main business objectives of the project showing that you have a clear vision and know your goals. Then write a paragraph about major risks of your project but stay positive providing your solutions right away. Stress the strong sides of your company and the competencies of the team behind the project. 5. Key Business Plan Numbers By the moment you write executive summary you are supposed to knowà exactlyà how much funding you need. So provide the highlights in the form of investment summary table. It puts investment structure vs. nvestment purposes of your project. So anyone reading your executive summary will understand what you need money for, how much of your own capital you invest and how much is expected from other sources (direct investment, bank loans, start up grants etc. ) Also state how much revenues your project will generate (revenue projections) and of course the payback period of your project ââ¬â how long will it take for your project to become cash flow positive. ple Projectsà >à Sample #4| Sample #4| [The data in this form is either fictitious or has been adapted with a firm's permission. A History of Happiness
The concept of happiness is one that causes controversies, some says it doesnââ¬â¢t exist and others revere it. In this particular case one can read the facts of this phenomenon on the article A History of Happiness. In this article is recounted how the view of happiness has changed with time. Furthermore, it is compared one against the other. It is mentioned how linguistics shows the happiness as the human kind seeks being well and how this relates to our concept of it. ââ¬Å"Every Indo-European language without exception going way back to ancient Greek, the word for happiness is associated with the word luckâ⬠.It is quite credible this assumption as the author gives examples. This leads one to appreciate the way the ancient viewed happiness. For them it was given not obtained, it ââ¬Å"was what happened to usâ⬠. Also it was believed blindly that it was utterly out of human hands. Therefore, the Classical philosophy main aim was concentrated on happiness and some of t he most known ancient philosophers focused on it. Although, their view was that happiness could be earned. Moreover, it was thought that it was ââ¬Å"an outcome of moral comportmentâ⬠rather than an emotional state. So only a few would be able to achieve it.As an antithesis of the ancient view, the modern type of happiness was transformed as right. Thomas Jefferson declares it to be a ââ¬Å"self-evident truthâ⬠while George Mason speaks of the chase and obtain of happiness as a ââ¬Å"natural endowmentâ⬠. In this manner, gives a democratic view of the concept. Which lead to an open abhorrent of any kind of oligarchy towards what it should be had by mankind. Then we have John Locke, an English philosopher, who said that human ââ¬Å"shouldnââ¬â¢t assume that suffering is our natural lotâ⬠. Also, that one should maximize oneââ¬â¢s pleasure on Earth. Hence we acquire the belief of feeling good above being good.Thereââ¬â¢s a darker side to everything and h appiness is not the exception. This new perspective make people believe that it can be acquired and ââ¬Å"consumedâ⬠rather a well lived life. In this way it makes one think that it should be had all the time without any kind of effort. However scienceââ¬â¢s discoveries tell otherwise, they believe that some of the ancient views should be kept. This serves as a counter to the obsession the right of happiness has brought. People think if theyââ¬â¢re not in happiness they are abnormal and it leads them to search for it in a non- materialistic happiness. Therefore itââ¬â¢s no wonder churchââ¬â¢s are replete. The newly acquired knowledge serves me to further explain my standpoint about the phenomenon. People become slaves of an ideal which it utterly nuts and in the end human donââ¬â¢t evolve from emotional frame of mind and therefore doesnââ¬â¢t invite to critical thinking. I found this excerpt quite interesting, by that I mean it left me unsatisfied. It served i ts purpose, to leave unsatisfied and thirsty the reader. I admire his courage for actually speaking of the unspeakable, as it dares one to actually entails our beliefs and actually approach the whys of it.

How gender conceptions developed and changed during the period of Research Paper
How gender conceptions developed and changed during the period of Jacksonian America - Research Paper Example Therefore, any attempt to fully understand the development of Americaââ¬â¢s societal history must take into account the changes that occurred during these years. This seems especially true when considering the notion of gendered identity of both males and females in the public and private spheres that have determined much of the history of American family, educational, and societal life. Because Jacksonââ¬â¢s presidency occurred during a time when the industrial and transportation revolutions were just beginning in the US, and were characterized by expansions and alterations of expectations among the various classes that made up the American social, political, and economic scenes, the ways that men and women came to view their roles in American life during this early birth of modernization are important to review. This brief paper will consider how gendered identities came to be established among men and women during the Jacksonian period, in light of the other social, economic , and religious changes that occurred. ... When discussing issues of gender, it is important to point out that there are varying definitions and ideas surrounding the term, and that changes have occurred over time regarding what it means. Many people hear the word ââ¬Å"genderâ⬠and automatically think it signifies simply ââ¬Å"maleâ⬠or ââ¬Å"female.â⬠However, the terms ââ¬Å"maleâ⬠and ââ¬Å"femaleâ⬠are actually categories of sex, not gender, and refer to the biological and physiological characteristics that define men and women. The word ââ¬Å"genderâ⬠more appropriately refers to the socially-constructed roles, behaviors, activities, and attributes that a society considers appropriate for both men and women. Characteristics of gender are based mainly on attributes that are considered either ââ¬Å"masculineâ⬠or ââ¬Å"feminine.â⬠(Rubin 1975). These attributes are greatly influenced by the religious, economic, cultural and political aspects that make up a given society. The ways in which various elements within society function and interact with one another is a key factor in establishing these roles. Due to the fact that gender conception is socially determined, these roles and their interpretations are subject to change. For example, Dorsey (2002) argues that during much of early American history the concept of gender emphasized the differences in societal roles between men and women, and in fact, much evidence exists which suggests that gender conceptions during the time of Jacksonian America were largely focused on the different social roles and duties of both men and women (Welter 1966, Johnson 1880). However, recent interpretive views of gender, argues Dorsey, take into account the influences of economic class, religious

Educational Biography Statement Personal Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Educational Biography - Personal Statement Example The first lesson I learned in school was about authority. I learned that you did not question it. My parents were the type of parents that were always on the side of the school. They had a sort of conflicted relationship with public schools because they both had a difficult time in school. On the one hand, they recognized that the people in school were professionals and were there to teach me. They had a lot of trust in my individual teachers and always believed what they said. If I went home and said, ââ¬Å"Mrs. Kershaw smacked my had with a ruler today!â⬠they would ask me, ââ¬Å"Well, what did you do?â⬠They never questioned a teacherââ¬â¢s authority to discipline or teach me, so this taught me to listen and obey my teachers. On the other hand, my parents were almost paranoid about the institution of education. They were suspicious of the people at the very top. The superintendents, principals and specialists that ran the school and were responsible for the big pict ure were viewed as lazy and wasteful. Nothing they did was every OK with my parents. They railed against tax increases, curriculum changes and decisions about school safety. It took me a long time to realize that my parents were taking a stance against what they perceived as management (Cook, 1978). Both were laborers and they viewed my teachers as peers, but everyone else was management. I was in high school before I figured out why my parents were so supportive of the education system on the one hand, and so against it on the other. This was the beginning of my own conflicted feelings about schooling and education. By high school, I could see that my parents wanted me to get a college education so that I would be a part of a class of people that they mistrusted. I know that this sounds conflicted, but thatââ¬â¢s my parents. They wanted me to be more secure than they were themselves, but their view was that the only way this could happen was to be something other than I was. Not quite fitting into a defined social position is not something new for me. From elementary, through middle and high school, I always felt that all of the students were strongly encouraged to fill a slot in a specified, existing group. Some students are academically inclined, others are athletes. Some students are compliant while others are rowdy troublemakers. There seemed to be a lot of either/or decisions that were expected of me in school that caused me to question what I was and what I really wanted out of life. Two of these incidences that were very powerful occurred when I was in elementary and high school. They both involved a conflict in scheduling that could have been resolved had the school not been trying to force me into a specified social construct. In elementary school, there were many activities that were commonly called pullouts by the teachers. Looking back, I realize that some of these pullouts were for students that struggled to learn, but others were and effort t o differentiate instruction for small groups of students (Tomlinson, 2005). I was identified as Gifted students, so one of my pullouts was a required class called Reach. I met with other Gifted students at this

Eight steps of decision making process in management Research Paper
Eight steps of decision making process in management - Research Paper Example Under this process, policy makers must identify the problem under consideration, and clearly state it out, in a sentence that describes the causes of the problem and its consequences. This process also involves an identification of what an organization wants to achieve in case the problem under consideration is eradicated. This stage needs a consensus amongst everybody involved within the decision making process. The second step is the identification of the criteria (Robbins and Coulter, 2012). This involves identifying the various requirement needed for purposes of solving the problem under consideration. Under this stage, policy maker identify what the solution to the problem must accomplish. For example, if an organization is making losses, then the solution that the organization seeks is on how to increase the profitability of the business organization. On this basis, the solutions to be identified are methods of increasing the profits of an organization. The criterion therefore is that the solution must have the capability of increasing the profitability of the business organization. The third step in the decision making process is allocating weights to the criteria identified (Robbins and Coulter, 2012). This involves setting up of goals for the purpose of achieving a desirable outcome. For example if the problem under consideration is loss making in an organization. Allocation of weights will involve; how or at what percentage a criterion identified can increase the profitability of an organization. At this stage, terms such as high profit, low profit, or even 100% profit can be used. The fourth step is the identification of the various alternatives to the solution. It is important to denote that there are various solutions to a problem identified. For example in our case above, if a company is making losses, the organization can come up with a variety of solutions. These solutions include reducing operational costs, injecting more capital into the organ ization, or even diversifying its business operations. Under this fourth stage, policy makers only identify the various solutions available for purposes of solving the problem under consideration. They do not carry out an analysis of the problems. The fifth stage involves analyzing the alternatives presented. This stage involves an analysis of the various alternative solution to the problem identified. The method to use in analyzing these alternatives will emanate from the criteria identified at the second stage (Lynch, 2012). For instance, in a loss making organization, the criteria of identifying a solution is based on how a method will increase the profitability of a business organization. On this note, policy makers will analyze the various alternative solutions to the problem. At this stage, policy makers must rank the various alternatives to the solution from the most effective, to the least effective. Under this stage, policy makers can analyze the alternatives by using eithe r qualitative or quantitative methods, or a combination of both. The intention here is to find the most effective solution to the problem identified. For example, the solutions identified to increase the profitability of a company are, reduction of operational costs, injecting capital into the organization, or even diversifying the operations of the business. Policy makers will analyze all these options, and grade them from the most eff

Economic100 Analysis - Article Example Broccoli, which was yesterday priced at $6.99/kg in store, could drop down to as low as $2.99/kg. Other winter vegetables, such as cauliflower and cabbage, will see similar reductions. Fruit would eventually follow, but would not drop as much, he said. Banana lovers will be the hardest hit however. ââ¬Å"They will stay up for at least six months,â⬠he said. Ausveg, the national peak industry body representing the interests of Australian vegetable and potato growers, has also predicted the drop in vegetable prices. ââ¬Å"Weââ¬â¢ve predicted a price drop in the coming months. We will see a return to normal pricing,â⬠Ausveg spokesman Hugh Tobin said. ââ¬Å"Areas devastated by the floods like the Lockyer Valley are getting back on track.â⬠Ausveg had estimated national losses in vegetable and fruit production was at approximately $225 million. Price drop Winter vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage are expected to drop in price by almost 50% in the ne xt two to three months. Fruit will slowly follow, depending on the weather, but bananas will not return to normal prices for at least six months.1 Report Introduction The price level of food products influences majority of each householdââ¬â¢s expenditure, therefore changes in prices draw peopleââ¬â¢s attention. ... It also mentions fruits following sometime later, without being exact. It is expressing pessimistic predictions about bananaââ¬â¢s specifically, affected by Yasi cyclone, estimating the recovery process to last at least 6 months. The national wealth suffered a terrible loss due to the flooding, and the article estimates $225 million loss in production. However, these estimates do not take into account the future consequences of losing the foreign market share. The reasons for prices being up for a long period of time and their estimated changes are hidden within laws of demand and supply. The elasticity of demand also influences the situation, and the purpose of the report is to give reasons for this thesis. Thereââ¬â¢s a high possibility of inflation affecting the situation further, and that will be also discussed. Analysis The law of supply and demand states that all other things constant, there exists an equilibrium point on the intersection of supply and demand curves, wher e the needs of customers and suppliers are met - optimal resource allocation, and that markets naturally strive for it (graph 1).4 Graph 1. Supply and demand equilibrium. Source: Investopedia. ââ¬Å"The floods have damaged crops and caused disruption to supply.â⬠5 What happened in Australia, with natural disasters ââ¬â flood and cyclone ââ¬â affecting available sources of goods, is called a supply shock. As the amount of fruits and vegetables supplied decreased, the supply curve shifted left, and the corresponding equilibrium price increased (graphs 2 and 3). ââ¬Å"Growers whose crops have not been destroyed have had difficulty transporting their products to market

Italy profolio - Essay Example Undercapitalization too, of banks in Europe contributed to it as they faced liquidity and debt problems. This also slowed down the economic growth in this zone as it was unevenly distributed within member states. Meanwhile, the governments of states mostly severely affected by this crisis have tried to coordinate their actions. A committee by the name ââ¬ËThe Troikaââ¬â¢ who has constituting member organizations are; European Commission, Central Bank and International Monetary Fund takes care of this issue. Fiscal policy stimulates the slowing of the economy through the tax cuts while the spending the rises. Increase in spending does take place quickly while the tax cuts may take a long time to cause an impact on gross spending and output. In monetary policy, through Federal Reserve Act, The Federal Reserve System and Federal Market Committee should be in the forefront in promoting some excellent employment goals, long term and mode rest interest rates with stable prices. Through this principle, Federal Reserve can regulate the value of money and credit plus their price-interest rates thereby influencing employment, output and general level of prices. The legislature is composed of the lower house, which is the chamber of deputies and the upper house comprising of senate. Despite the houses being legally equal, the Chamber of Deputies has influence that is more political and most Italyââ¬â¢s vocal politicians do fall in this chamber. All house members are elected by popular votes for a term of 5years in office. The Senate has 315 seats while that of Chamber of Deputies has 630 seats and another 10 seats reserved for ââ¬Ëlife membersââ¬â¢ who includes past presidents and honorary nomineesââ¬â¢. A voter must be of 25years of age to cast his or her vote for Senate while in other elections, 18years is the minimum age to vote. Philosophy of education Essay Example for Free
Philosophy of education Essay Philosophy is a set of beliefs or ideas one has towards their discipline or line of work. Don Kauchak and Paul Eggen, authors of the textbook ââ¬Å"Introduction to Teaching: Becoming a Professional,â⬠define philosophy as ââ¬Å"The study of theories of knowledge, truth, existence, and moralityâ⬠[ (Kauchak Eggen, 2011) ]. The philosophy of education is a very important aspect of teaching. It is meant to guide teachers in the classroom and offer insight to the thinking of past experts [ (Kauchak Eggen, 2011) ]. It often will answer the main questions any new and even seasoned teachers have when preparing to teach in the classroom. There are various degrees of philosophy, for example; there is the philosophy of life, the philosophy of religion, and the philosophy of education. However, there are four philosophies of education they include: Perennialism, Essentialism, Progressivism, and Social Reconstructionism. After calculating my scores on the philosophical assessment in the Kauchak and Eggen textbook, I found that my personal philosophy of education is an equal combination of Perennialism and Social Reconstructionism. According to Kauchak and Eggen, Perennialism consists of the teaching of classic knowledge [ (Kauchak Eggen, 2011) ]. This includes literacy, mathematics, and science. Another way of looking at this is teaching studentââ¬â¢s subjects that they will use in the future, even if it does not seem relevant now. The definition of perennial is ââ¬Å"long-termâ⬠and that is exactly how a teacher with a Perennialism philosophy teaches. Social Reconstructionism, according to Kauchak and Eggen is ââ¬Å"An educational philosophy suggesting that schools, teachers, and students should lead in alleviating social inequities in our societyâ⬠[ (Kauchak Eggen, 2011) ]. In other words, a teacher with this philosophy teaches their students about social problems, improving society and teaching their students about personal responsibilities. Perennialism and Social Reconstructionism are each on opposite ends of the spectrum. Social Reconstructionism focuses more on the society in which the student lives, while Perennialism focuses more on the intellect of the student. Having these two as my personal philosophies is a bit difficult. While I do believe teaching tolerance and understanding is important, I also know that learning mathematics, science and literacy is equally important. After reading the scenario on page 219 of the Kauchak and Eggen textbook, I would respond to the students by first trying to motivate them. Offering incentives is a great way to get studentsââ¬â¢ attention; they are more eager to pay attention if they are pursuing it to get something out of it. You can use anything as a motivator; my favorite was always free dessert at lunch! You can also give extra credit points on the next quiz or for younger students you could offer an incentive such as ââ¬Å"line leaderâ⬠or ââ¬Å"bathroom monitorâ⬠for the day. The younger students love when they think they are in charge of something, it can also help their self-esteem knowing they are doing something important. I do believe this is more of an example of Perennialism, however, depending on the specific motivator and the response it gets; it could be Social Reconstructionism as well. The second response I would try is starting a discussion. I would try getting the studentsââ¬â¢ attention by putting them in discussion groups or having a discussion as a whole class. This would definitely be an example of Social Reconstructionism. This encourages the students to work together and to come up with a solution together. It gives them a chance to ask each other questions before asking the teacher. It also compels them to stay focused on the topic and eliminates the ââ¬Å"my hand wasnââ¬â¢t raisedâ⬠excuse. My third response, though I would make it my last resort, would be to write a summary on what was taught during the instruction. By doing this, it makes the students want and need to listen in order to do their assignment correctly. This also offers a chance to get some feedback from the teacher and allows you to reflect on what you learned and what you need to work on. This is an example of Perennialism, as it deals with the thought process and encouraging literacy. While Perennialism and Social Reconstructionism are complete opposites, they also share some characteristics, making it easier to teach using both philosophies. Many common knowledge subjects can be transitioned to include activities that work well to alleviate social problems. In math, you can have the students work in groups. This promotes team work and logic. In literacy, you may give reading assignments dealing with a specific problem in society (e. g. poverty, bullying, etc) and have the students write summaries on what they read. This can promote logical thinking as well as establishing knowledge of the society issue in the reading.

Macroenvironmantal forces: Banking industry
Macroenvironmantal forces: Banking industry Social forces include the demographic characteristics of the population and its value. Demographic Age structure One important trend is the shifting age structure of the worlds population, as aging is now a phenomenon realized by people around the world. Households and Family The number of households has been growing, as the household size has correspondingly been declining. Also, there appears to be an increase in the number of double-income family. Population Shifts As a result of the over-development and congestion of the city center, previously rural area are been urbanized which caused large proportions of Asian population reallocated from city centers to suburbs. Shifts from home to foreign countries are also common. Culture A second social force, culture, incorporates the set of values, ideas and attitudes that are learned and shared among the members of a group. The changing attitudes and Roles of Men and Women Research suggests that the majority or adults today believe men and women should equally share most responsibilities. Beliefs, Values and Habits The values of the population change with the demographics of the people who hold these values. People who are more educated live a busy lifestyle which indicates that they place great importance on efficiency and the up-to-date information. The increasing median age population implies the majority would be more mature when allocating incomes. The increase in the number of double-income couples results in growing emphasis on the togetherness of a family which implies higher values on leisure time spent as family. A change in consumption orientation is also apparent. Today, and for the foreseeable future, value consciousness will drive consumption behavior. Economic and Regulatory Forces The economy pertains to the income, expenditures, and resources that affect the cost of running a business and household. Regulation consists of restrictions that laws in different Asian countries place on business with regard to the conduct of its activities. Business and Consumer Expectations Of particular concern at the macroeconomic level is the inflationary or recessionary state of the economy. During the most recent financial crisis started in 2007, the banking industry suffered huge losses. Although a lot of signs indicate that the economy is recovering, people nowadays are still not so confident about the future. Liberalization As a result of globalization, liberalization in trade and investment is encouraged in order to facilitate international interactions in economic and social arenas by diplomatic coordination of regulations and standards. As a result, the economy is more dynamic and efficient which becomes easier for countries to attract foreign direct investment. Increasing Regulations on Banking Industry Due to the financial crisis, many countries are establishing more regulations that decrease the potential to earn profits from investments and other activities at banks in order to protect both the customers and the banks. Technological Forces Technology refers to inventions or innovations from applied science or engineering research. Each new wave of technological innovation can replace existing products and companies. Electronic Business Technologies In the past two decades, consumers are becoming much more reliant on online management of their bank accounts as the number of homes and businesses enjoying broadband access to the Internet has reached true mass-market scope. With the increasing worlds cellphone subscriber base, the lower phone prices and the expand of cellular service, a truly revolutionary wave of mobile phones that can manage financial accounts is slowly taking root all over the world. However, with the sophistication of the Internet has arisen the issue of cyber security, another technological change to which the banking industry has had to respond. Implication Obviously, the indication of an aging population has brought about substantial growth in savings and retirement plans. Smaller households and double-income families lead to higher discretionary incomes that can be saved or invested. Thus, in the banking industry, marketers should offer more savings and investment account options which enables consumers to select the most appropriate plan that can be personalized to best suit themselves. Due to the unique attitudes, ancestry, communication preferences and lifestyles of different groups according to generation cohorts, genders and so on, the banking industry may develop different marketing programs. As, the technology develops, banks should consider offering a comprehensive range of services, such as viewing and making transactions, paying bills, online and by cell phone in order to provide convenience for customers so as to gain customers. Moreover, for customers accounts safety, banks should create more secure systems and give instructions on how to protect ones account. Considering population shifts, establishing more branches properly with regard to the bank size and target customers would be a wise choice. One important strategy can be offering customers foreign currency accounts responding to the increase in foreign currency use. Another noteworthy strategy would be developing online savings accounts for the teenagers due to the increasing level of education. From this, banks can further educate the youth and encourage financial management, and develop future loyalty customers Banks should develop low-risk investment programs as people are still not so confident about the future economy. An era of much lower risk-taking by traditional lenders has begun that will last for years. As consumers are becoming more value conscious, the banking industry will become more competitive. Banks have to compete on value of their services in order to get customers who are requiring more transparency when choosing product. Greatly increased regulatory oversight will restrict lenders and investment companies of all types. Alternative lending sources will be used to a growing degree by small businesses and some consumers unable to get loans elsewhere. 2. Responses and comments: Maybank has done the following in response to the macroenvironmental changes. Deciding whether the response is appropriate or not, we need to consider whether there are needs and wants for it, whether it is targeting the right group , whether there are points of difference, and whether Maybank would be more likely to reach its goal by performing the response. Offering a number of savings and investment account options such as the Gold Savings Passbook Account and Flexi Plan 2. This response is appropriate as it responded to growth in savings and retirement plans. Moreover, different options can cater to different group of people which will broaden the banks target customers. Pioneering online savings accounts for the teenage market by developing the imteen account. imteen account is a good idea as through Multi-tiered interest rate, Passbookless, Convenient ATM access, Online access, Free Personal Accident (PA) coverage, Academic Cash rewards, Maybank will attract parents who want their children(12-18y) to learn to manage their finance with small risk, and earn future customers. Establishing branches throughout Asia region as well as the world. As Maybanks businesses are mainly in South East Asia, it is not advisable for it to launch a lot of branches outside Asia as it will not be profitable in the short run. In addition, since the world is still in the shadow of crisis, Maybank should focus more on regain trusts from customers instead of expanding its businesses quickly. Developing the low-maintenance Premier Club account for individuals who are constantly on the go This response is appropriate since it satisfies the needs of people who are busy and in need of current events and situations. Offering its customers its range of foreign currency accounts which minimize the risk of foreign exchange rate fluctuations. This action is appropriate as it sets clear targeted segments and tries to satisfy their needs and wants of exchanging foreign currency easily and frequently. Offering a comprehensive range of services that is accessible online while implementing the Transaction Authorisation Code system to create a more secure environment. These responses are obviously right as they meet customers needs and wants of making transactions and other services online conveniently and safely. Offering many services accessible by cell phone. Using M-money to conduct services which is promoted to be secure and convenient. Maybank needs to be careful when implementing the technology. Although mobile banking makes banking services possible everywhere, there are still a lot of challenges. Firstly, Maybank have to find ways to satisfy customers with different mobile phones since it is very difficult for banks to offer mobile banking solution on any type of device. Secondly, security of financial transactions, being executed from remote locations and transmission over the air, need to be addressed jointly by mobile application developers, wireless network service providers and the banks IT departments. Thirdly, another challenge for Maybank is to scale-up the mobile banking infrastructure to handle exponential growth of the customer base as banks unable to meet the customers increasing expectations from the solution may lose customer confidence. Other responses: Responding to the changing attitudes and roles of men and women, Maybank should develop banking services catering to both genders. As indicated in the textbook, in Singapore, the United Overseas Bank launched a credit card just for ladies under the advertising theme, The Men Dont Get It. Maybank should expand its female customer group by providing special services like promotions on spa, shopping, dining, and travelling and so on. The trend of value consciousness leads to Maybank analyzing the market more carefully. Maybe it should add low-fee credit cards in response to this new orientation. In order to earn money and minimize the risk when lending, Maybank should try to develop new ways to make loans to customers. For example, enabling lending by and between members of lending clubs, or between friends and family. 3. Some of the macroenvironmental forces affecting other industries are the similar to those in the banking industry, while some are different. Similarities: For social environment, demographic forces nearly affect every industry greatly. For example, age structure will influence clothing industry by deciding what styles of clothes to produce, and will impact food industry on their strategy about what aspect should they concentrate on, tastes, calorie, or eating environment. It will also affect computer industry by customers needs and wants changing among different age groups. With regard to economic forces, globalization is an important trend. It has led to the rise of massive multinational food processing companies, which often sell their foods under local names in local languages, after producing them in regional factories worldwide. Due to globalization, more and more local clothes brands are known to the world and design, production, and selling can be done in different countries. The Computer industry is a truly globalized sector, where research, development and manufacturing of components and systems have grown in the labs and manufacturing plants of mainly Asia countries. When it comes to political environment, political risks matter similarly to almost all industries, as they need licenses, protection for properties in foreign countries, and avoidance of social unrest. In terms of technology forces, almost every industry is affected greatly nowadays. In clothing industry, the sweeping change in apparel retailing is the rising success of e-commerce which increases efficiency. Meanwhile, in food industry, technology has revolutionized the way that we grow, transport, process, package, purchase and cook food. There is no difference in banking industry as indicated above. Most importantly, technology is essential to computer industry, not only because of its own development, but also the other corresponding techniques such as Wi-Fi, and Internet appliances. Differences: From my point of view, all macroenvironmental forces will affect all industries. The difference lies in to what extend they affect the industry. Some may be tiny and marketers do not need to change strategies, some may huge which force marketers to respond. As for political environment, different laws impact differently to different industries. On one hand, Patent law, copyright law and other related laws are very important to many industries as they give inventors or author the right to protect their intellectual properties. It is especially important in computer industry, as the core of InfoTech is creation and wisdom. Also, in clothing industry, the increasing emphasis on copyright would prevent others from copying the design. However the effect would not be so significant in banking and food industry. On the other hand, the laws and regulations considering health are very crucial to food industry. Considering social forces, culture plays an important role in many industries. However, they may not be as powerful in banking industries as they are in other industries. For food industry, peoples purchases of food largely depend on their eating habits. Nevertheless, as people are paying more attention to health and fitness, it may need to change its focus from taste to lower calorie or full nutrition. In clothing industry, culture mainly determines what a group of people would wear. Also, as the increase concern on health, people have developed a keen interest in sports apparel and workout gear. On the other hand, for banking and computer industries, the effect of culture may not be that significant. Implication: Before making decisions on market strategies, marketers should first carry out a careful environmental scanning analyzing the main forces that affect the industry significantly and that should concentrate on. It is also advisable for marketers to notice all the other insignificant forces in case as the society develops, they become significant enough to affect the industry. Legal Positivism and Morality | An Analysis Legal Positivism and Morality | An Analysis There is no necessary connection between law and morality; and (2) legal validity is determined ultimately by reference to certain basic social facts and the main line of natural law theories that no sharp distinction can be drawn between law and morality The connection between morality and law is one of the biggest questions of jurisprudence. It has become the dispute between natural law and legal positivism and has created a many ways how to think about the scope of legal enforcement. Here we meet with two philosophical directions which are standing on opposite border against each other. Morality is very flexible, changing by generation. If there is any idea of changing a law, it takes hundred years to do it. Law and morality is every so often being connected. Right now, the countries base its laws on morals. Morality deals with question of correctness where on the other side laws are based on question of ethics. Law is characterized by specific people or by a society whereas morals are universal. The basic idea from which morals come is the concept of human rights. Laws are supposed to guarantee human rights but many fail to do so and restrict them. In my opinion I more tend to legal positivism. There are two basic values or reasons for that decision. First, all law are required to be written, where positivism make sure that the government will follow stated rules and apprise the members of society of their rights and obligations. In a legal system run according with positivist tenets, litigants would never be unfairly surprised by the government imposition of an un written legal obligation that was previously unknown. Second, positivism control judicial discretion. In some cases judges are not satisfied with the outcome of a case that would be decided by narrow law. For example, some judges may not want to allow a landlord to move out old and sick woman in the middle of winter, even if the law allows such action when rent is overdue. However, positivism requires judges to decide cases in accordance with the law. One of known philosopher Thomas Aquinas distinguishes four types of law-human, divine, eternal, and natural-as follows: A, Human law-an ordinance of reason for the common good promulgated by him who has the care of the community. B, Eternal law-Gods plan for all of creation. C, Natural law-The part of eternal law that applies to human beings; it is Gods plan for us. Natural law can be differenced by human reason, and it concludes in the correct moral principles. E.g. it is never permissible intentionally to kill an innocent human being, and one must never intend what is evil, even as a means to achieving a good or avoiding a bad result are natural laws, in Aquinass view. D, Divine law-the part of eternal law that God uncovers to us human beings via Scripture. If something is against natural law, then its against divine law as well. But some concepts, primarily of a religious nature, are oppositely to divine law but not natural law. For example, natural reason and natural law tell us that the God exists. But it is only through divine revelation that we can know that baptism, membership in the Christian church, etc. are necessary for our salvation. Aquinas insists that human laws are genuine laws only if they do not contradict either natural or divine law. Other Philosopher John Austin has definition of law as followed: a rule laid down for the guidance of an intelligent being by an intelligent being having power over him. There are two kinds of law: positive law (rules commanded by political superiors to their inferiors) and divine law (rules that God commands all human beings to follow). Law is commands, which Austin see as an expression of a wish by someone who has the willingness and ability to enforce compliance. (If you cannot or will not harm me in case I comply not with your wish, the expression of your wish is not a command.) Unlike Thomas Aquinas, John Austin does not make any differences between divine and natural law. Austin thinks that Gods commands to us are the true morality. Austin distinguishes divine law/the true morality from positive morality, or the beliefs about whats right/wrong, just/unjust that are held by the majority of people in some society. The positive morality of our society is right as it agree with divine law and incorrect insofar as it deviates from it. It does not have any value that Austin had an unorthodox view of the content of divine law. Austin believed that God commands us to be utility maximizes, making utilitarianism the true morality. Positive laws are driven by political superiors. John Austin calls these superiors the sovereign, and he defines sovereign as the person or persons who are not in the habit of obeying anyone else, and who everyone else is in the habit of obeying. Positive laws are general commands by people who themselves are not bound by them, and who can enforce obedience from everyone else. I dont really match with either of these philosophers ideas but if I should to tend to one of their views it would be the one of John Austins for a reason of his division of laws.
